Coclos, form greek κόχλος (screw)
Coclos, form greek κόχλος (screw).
The spiral is the symbol of the motion of the stars, that the ancient Greeks saw as a mystic movement screwed, later this symbol takes a new meaning, cycle and time, nowdays the concept of evolutionary movement is concrete.
The development of the structure is designed like a point of interactivity and communication between the individual and the art in all its conceptual and natural forms, translating the invitation and the comparison with other minds.
The directionality of line traces the evolution of the shape; moreover it’s connected to the idea/binomial of opening and content, that can be interpreted as opening towards environment (highlighted by the use of recycled material) and content considered as a collection of concepts, thus explaining its shape as a continuous process of becoming.
The structure consists of a large closed inner tube, 40 cm thickness, that is screwed like a spiral, forming a snail shell, slightly rotated, so that the ‘mouth’ of the shell becomes the entry of pavilion.
The inflatable structure has a ‘floor’ made in the same material of the entire body, that is monolayer without inner tube: this works in order to maintain the ground shape when the structure is inflated or the wind is very strong. In the points of connection between floor and inner tube, along the perimeter, it will be positioned the anchorage system of the whole structure.
The shell measures approximately 6 meters at the maximum height, in order to let the air circulate during the summer. This process is aided also by the spiral shape and the presence of a small half-moon opening at the top. This opening is covered, both outdoor and indoor, by a grid tissue which reduces the direct impact with the water in case it rains. The color of the inflatable structure is translucent white/grey.
The anchorage system consists on weights in recycled material, chylon, made by low-density or high-density polyethylene (LDPE and HDPE), obtained by recycled bottles, old containers, wood-shavings and waste (55% polyethylene, 45% wood). This material can be extruded, forged and modeled with wood tools. Density of chylon is 1010 – 1080 Kg/mc, it is suitable for making seats, benches and body of chairs.
External weights are placed outside the entry of the pavilion: they consist of three solid cubes of different size (30x30x30 cm, 27 Kg – 25x25x25 cm, 15,5 Kg – 20x20x20 cm, 8 Kg), in order to create a movement that follows the shell line.
Each cube, placed at the distance of one meter, is located on the ground and is connected to the inner tube by steel cables.
Internal anchorage system is designed in order to ease also other different functions, that’s to say benches and light compartment. It is planned like a low bench with a slightly inclined backrest. Its surface is characterized by an embossed texture anti-skid; each module measures one meter in length and is about 40 Kg in weight.
The whole anchorage system is about 330 Kg in weight and it consists of seven benches and three cubes. The weight can be changed, adding or subtracting benches, depending on the strength of the wind.
The lighting system is composed on bright spots based upon ultra-bright led. The lamp has a conical shape and a reflective surface.
The bright spots are located down at the external sides of the benches, fixed with steel rods on which the lamps can be rotated or translated, both in horizontal and vertical.
